VW ID.Buzz Cargo & e-Transporter: electric commercial vehicles compared
VW e-Transporter comparison 2026: VW is steadily expanding its range of electric commercial vehicles. The ID.Buzz Cargo as an electric panel van and various e-Transporter variants are available in 2026. But for tradespeople, delivery services and companies there is a third option: the electric conversion of an existing VW Transporter. We compare all the options.
ID.Buzz Cargo: the electric panel van
The ID.Buzz Cargo is VW's electric panel van based on the MEB platform. With up to 3.9 cubic metres of load volume, a payload of around 600 kg and the 77 kWh battery (up to 410 km WLTP range), it is aimed at commercial users in the city and surrounding area. The price starts at around €50,000 net.
Strengths: quiet access to city centres (important for city logistics and trades), no diesel bans, lower running costs (no AdBlue, less maintenance). Weaknesses: payload is lower than the diesel van, and load volume does not match the T6.1 Transporter.
VW Transporter (T6.1) with electric conversion
For companies that want to electrify their existing fleet, the electric conversion of an existing T5 or T6 Transporter offers an economically attractive alternative. With a ESDI T5/T6 conversion kit you keep the full load volume – the MEB battery modules are fitted in the underbody. Battery pack and subframe weigh around 800 kg; the payload therefore initially drops, but with different springs the vehicle can be uprated enough to restore the same payload as before.
The advantages for businesses: you already know your vehicle, the fit-out (shelving, tool cabinets, lettering) is retained, and the conversion costs at €34,990 (kit) or €39,990 (with installation) are below the new price of an ID.Buzz Cargo. With a fleet of several vehicles, the conversion can be carried out step by step.
Range and charging in everyday commercial use
For most commercial uses — tradesman journeys, parcel delivery, care services — 150–200 km of daily range is sufficient. A converted T5/T6 with an 82 kWh battery manages that easily. Charging takes place overnight at the wallbox on the company premises. The energy costs are around €6 per 100 km — compared with €15–18 for diesel, a considerable saving that quickly adds up with commercial use.
The ID.Buzz Cargo, with 300+ km of range, offers a buffer for longer working days. In return, DC fast charging at up to 185 kW is a clear advantage: in a 30-minute break you have recharged 200 km.
Economics compared
Over a usage period of 5 years and 25,000 km per year, the picture looks like this: the ID.Buzz Cargo costs around €50,000 (net) plus around €3,500 in energy and €2,500 in maintenance – total costs around €56,000. A T5 with an ESDI kit costs €34,990 (kit without installation) or €39,990 (with installation), gross – around €29,400 or €33,600 net – plus around €3,500 in energy and €2,000 in maintenance over 5 years: total net costs around €34,900–39,100, excluding the base vehicle. Converting with an ESDI kit therefore saves companies money compared with the ID.Buzz Cargo – depending on the vehicle's condition.
Subsidies for commercial electric vehicles
Commercial electric vehicles can benefit from various funding programmes : a KfW loan for electric commercial vehicles, regional funding programmes, and the THG quota. There is currently neither federal nor state funding for converting existing vehicles (as of 09/2026); you can use the THG quota after re-registration.
Conclusion: the right choice for your business
The ID.Buzz Cargo is the convenient solution with maximum range and manufacturer warranty — ideal for companies that prefer new vehicles. The electric conversion of an existing Transporter is the more economical and sustainable alternative — ideal for businesses that want to convert their fleet step by step while saving costs. VW e-Transporter comparison: our conclusion

The VW e-Transporter comparison shows: for businesses and tradespeople, the ESDI electric conversion is a serious alternative to buying new. According to ADAC the operating costs of an electric transporter are up to 40 percent lower than for a diesel. An ESDI kit with installation is €39,990 — well below the price of a new ID.Buzz Cargo, which starts at around €50,000 net. In the VW e-Transporter comparison the ESDI conversion scores particularly well on load space, since the proven T5/T6 platform is retained; the payload can be restored by uprating.
