What is the Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU)?

The Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) is the heart of the drive in the Tesla Model S and Model X. It combines electric motor, gearbox and power electronics in a compact housing. Depending on the variant, the LDU delivers between 362 hp (S75) and over 760 hp (P100D) and is responsible for its impressive acceleration.

Despite the robust construction of the Tesla LDU, typical signs of wear appear after 80,000-150,000 km: the rotor ball bearings begin to wear and cause grinding or howling noises that increase with speed. Leaking oil seals lead to gear-oil escaping. In severe cases the rotor itself can be damaged, which leads to strong vibrations.

A Tesla LDU repair at ESDI targets precisely these weak points. Instead of replacing the entire drive unit for €5,000-€8,000 at Tesla, we specifically replace the worn components: ball bearings (SKF industrial quality), shaft seals, oil seals and all flat gaskets. In the variant with rotor overhaul, the rotor shaft is additionally checked, balanced and, if necessary, renewed.

Our Tesla LDU repair is available for all Tesla Model S and Model X with a Large Drive Unit: S60, S70, S75, S85, S90, P85, P85D, P90D and P100D. The repair takes place at our technology centre in Herford (05221 779150). You send us the removed LDU — we discuss the coordination after the order is placed. The turnaround time is around 5 working days.
