How the repair works
Removal at your workshop
Your workshop removes the drive unit. We do not accept complete vehicles.
Sent in on a pallet
The removed LDU comes to us in Herford on a pallet, by freight forwarder or delivered by you.
Inspection
We open the unit, check bearings, seals and the winding insulation, and tell you whether it can be repaired. €300 net, credited in full if you go ahead.
Findings & approval
You receive the findings. The overhaul starts only with your approval.
New bearings & seals
All ball bearings, shaft seals and gaskets renewed, including bearing and seal on the rotor side.
Return shipment
The overhauled unit goes back to you or your workshop, where it is refitted.

What is the Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU)?
The Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) is the heart of the drive in the Tesla Model S and Model X. It combines electric motor, gearbox and power electronics in a compact housing. Depending on the variant, the LDU delivers between 362 hp (S75) and over 760 hp (P100D) and is responsible for its impressive acceleration.
Despite the robust construction of the Tesla LDU, typical signs of wear appear after 80,000-150,000 km: the rotor ball bearings begin to wear and cause grinding or howling noises that increase with speed. Leaking oil seals lead to gear-oil escaping. In severe cases the rotor itself can be damaged, which leads to strong vibrations.
A Tesla LDU repair at ESDI targets exactly these weak points. Instead of replacing the entire drive unit at Tesla, we replace the worn components: ball bearings, shaft seals, oil seals and all flat gaskets. We also replace the bearing and the seal on the rotor side: the bearing at the stator and the seal inside the rotor shaft. That is exactly where the known coolant leak starts, which floods the power electronics.
Tesla LDU repair: for which models?
Our Tesla LDU repair is available for all Tesla Model S and Model X with a Large Drive Unit: S60, S70, S75, S85, S90, P85, P85D, P90D and P100D. The repair takes place at our technology centre in Herford (+49 5221 779150). You send us the removed LDU — we arrange the coordination once the order has been placed. The turnaround time is about 5 working days.
