Replace the MEB battery module
The modular design of the MEB battery allows us to replace defective modules in a targeted way – more cost-effectively and faster than a complete renewal. This page explains the technology, the process and when a module replacement makes sense.
The modular design of the MEB battery
The MEB battery (Modular Electric Battery platform from Volkswagen) is not monolithic, but consists of up to 12 einzelnen Modulen, which together form the complete battery pack. This design is the heart of efficient repairs.
Structure and arrangement
- Physische Anordnung: 2 levels (top/bottom), each with up to 6 modules per level, stacked under the vehicle floor
- Each module: Contains 24 cells per module (in 12s2p or 8s3p configuration depending on the pack variant)
- Nominal voltage per module: ~44 V for 12s2p modules or ~29 V for 8s3p modules (NMC cell chemistry, 3.7 V nominal per cell)
- Verbindung: Hochstromstecker (HV-Connectors) an Busbalken, BMS-Kommunikation über CAN-Bus
- Cooling: Aluminium-Kühlplatten zwischen Modulen, Flüssigkeitskreislauf auf Packebene
- BMS-Integration: Each module has local temperature and voltage sensors; the central battery management system controls balancing
Zellchemie
NMC cells (nickel manganese cobalt), mostly LG or CATL, nominal voltage 3.6–3.7 V per cell. High energy density, good cycle stability.
Thermales Design
Passive heat dissipation through contact with the cooling plate, active liquid cooling under high load or fast charging, insulation against airflow.
The modular design allows individual faulty modules to be replaced without disassembling the entire pack – a major advantage over older battery systems.
Warum einzelne Module ausfallen
Not all modules age at the same rate. Certain positions and conditions lead to earlier wear and capacity loss.
Zelldrift
Different self-discharge rates between individual cell groups lead to voltage imbalances. Over time a module becomes the weak point.
Thermische Hotspots
Modules at the edges (position 1, 12) or under the rear bench (7–8) experience higher ambient temperatures, faster degradation.
Fertigungstoleranzen
Different cell quality, contact resistance in the plug or busbar, asymmetric current distribution during charging/discharging.
Kapazitätsdegradation
Typical 2–3% capacity loss per year with normal use, up to 5% with fast charging or extreme temperatures. If a module drops faster, the BMS can isolate it.
Selbstentladung
Internal leakage curves over weeks/months, especially with older cells or defective separators. A module can drop from 100% to 0% without being charged.
Module replacement vs. complete replacement
Not every battery defect requires a complete replacement. A proper diagnosis shows whether individual modules can be replaced in a targeted way.
Entscheidungsmatrix
If all three criteria are met: A module replacement is economically sensible.
When does a module replacement make sense?
- • 1–2 modules show cell drift or capacity drop > 20%
- • The rest of the vehicle (other modules) is in good condition (ageing < 10%)
- • The BMS can isolate defective modules, the range is still acceptable
- • Vehicle age < 6 years, no water damage or accident damage to the pack
When is a complete replacement necessary?
- • > 3 modules defective or average capacity < 80%
- • Water damage, fire damage or physical trauma to the pack
- • BMS defective (central control), not just local module isolation
- • Cost of module replacement > 50% of a new pack
The replacement process step by step
A professional MEB module replacement requires precision, specialised tools and knowledge of ESD safety. This is how the process works at ESDI:
Diagnosis & OBD scan
Complete OBD-II and BMS scan, the reader reads capacity per module, voltages, temperature sensors. Noise analysis to isolate faulty cells. Written diagnosis with the location of the problem modules.
Securing & insulation
Vehicle on the lift, disconnect the 12V system from the battery, deactivate the HV main switch (if present), discharge the pack at high resistance via a bleed resistor, waiting time ~30 min (no residual charge).
Pack-Öffnung & ESD-Schutz
Earth the tool trolley via an earthing mat, the technician wears an ESD wristband, floor covering under the vehicle with a 1 MΩ resistance to earth. Open the pack lid (plastic, adhesive), insulate the HV connections with HV caps.
Modulidentifikation & Demontage
Each module has an OEM serial number (VW, LG, CATL). Photograph the defective module, capture the barcode. Detach the HV plug (check the locking clips), loosen the cooling-plate bolts, carefully lift the module out (weight ~32 kg).
Replacement module check
New or tested Grade-A modules (never remanufactured without a certificate). Voltage measurement: should be 0 V (or < 1 V). Check the capacity with a rapid tester (≥ 90% remaining capacity acceptable). Document the serial number and confirmation of origin.
Einbau & Verschraubung
Insert the replacement module in the identical position, connect the cooling plates fully (check the thermal paste), screws with a torque wrench (6–8 Nm typical), push the HV plug in until it locks with a click, visually check the contact terminals.
Zellbalancierung & BMS-Reset
Bolt the pack lid back on, perform a vehicle-specific BMS reset (OBD reader or VW software), at least 30 min charging time at normal load (~4 kW) to balance the voltages, a new OBD scan to detect the new modules.
Testfahrt & Dokumentation
30–50 km test drive, observe the range display and charging behaviour, a further OBD scan to check for error codes, document everything: diagnostic PDFs, module serial numbers (old/new), test protocols, invoice with a 2-year warranty on the replaced module.
OEM quality vs. aftermarket
The quality of the replacement module determines long-term stability and warranty recognition by the vehicle manufacturer.

How long does my car stay in the workshop?
Diagnosis to final test: 6–8 hours (1 working day). With several modules or complications (e.g. coolant change) it can take 2 days. We offer courtesy vehicles.
How much does a module replacement cost approximately?
Module itself: €800–1,200, labour (8h @ €100): €800, diagnosis & test: €150. Total: approx. €1,750–2,200 per module. Exact prices after diagnosis. (No price guarantee – depending on the vehicle type and module availability.)
Do I get a warranty on the new module?
Yes, 24 months on the replaced module including installation. All work is documented towards the vehicle manufacturer and should not harm the warranty (provided the BMS is properly maintained).
Can I still go on holiday with a replaced module?
Yes. After a professional module replacement and BMS reset, the range is normal again. However, the remaining capacity of the other modules continues to drop with age. We give a range forecast after the test drive.
What happens to the old, defective module?
The old module is stored and, after about 6 months, recycled or sold to specialised module reprocessors. In this way we support the circular economy. You cannot take it home with you.
Can a module replacement improve my range?
Yes, if the vehicle previously had a heavily degraded module, the range can increase by 5–15%. However, the average range is never higher than the condition of the oldest remaining module allows. A complete battery check shows realistic expectations.
