Service campaign 93P7 on the VW ID.3 & ID.4: what you need to know
Complete information on known battery-cell faults in certain model variants, symptoms, solution approaches and how ESDI EV supports you.
What is service campaign 93P7?
Service campaign 93P7 is a campaign by Volkswagen AG to remedy known defects in the high-voltage battery cells in certain vehicle variants of the VW ID.3 and VW ID.4 from the 2021 model year. It is a service campaign – not a recall.
The technical problem: individual battery cells show increased self-discharge and insufficient cell balancing. This leads to noticeable power losses, faster drops in state of charge and potentially reduced range over time.
Volkswagen introduced this service campaign to ensure driving safety and restore the performance of affected vehicles. According to estimates, around 10,000 vehicles worldwide are affected.
Which vehicles are affected?
VW ID.3
Primarily model year 2021, certain production series with 58 kWh and 77 kWh battery variants
VW ID.4
Model year 2021, specific production batches with a high-voltage battery system from LG Chem
infoHow to check whether your vehicle is affected
- ✓ Contact an authorised VW dealer with your chassis number (VIN/FIN)
- ✓ The dealer can check on the basis of the production data whether your vehicle is affected
- ✓ Alternatively, you can Contact ESDI EV – we are happy to check independently
Symptoms that indicate service campaign 93P7
The following signs can indicate that your vehicle is affected by the known battery-cell faults:
battery_alertRapid SOC drop
The state-of-charge percentage drops disproportionately quickly, especially after standing overnight
speedReichweitenverlust
The available range is considerably lower than at the start of using the vehicle
alertFault in the battery management
Spezifische DTC-Codes im Batteriemanagementsystem, z.B. Zellausgleichs-Fehler
thermostatUnusual thermal management
More frequent or more intensive battery temperature control, even at rest
What VW offers in the service campaign
Standard measures of service campaign 93P7
Software-Update
In most cases VW performs a firmware update of the battery management system. This improves the cell-balancing algorithms and reduces self-discharge.
Module replacement (if required)
Should the software update not be sufficient, a battery module replacement can become necessary. This is included in the service campaign.
Free and prompt
All work within the service campaign is completely free of charge. VW recommends having the service campaign carried out promptly.
scheduleTimeframe and availability
The service campaign is available at authorised VW dealers. The execution usually takes 2–4 hours. Arrange an appointment with your dealer – waiting times can currently be several weeks.
What to do if VW does not help?
Häufige Ablehnungs-Szenarien
- Vehicle outside the service-campaign scope: VW refuses because your vehicle is allegedly not affected
- Problems after the VW treatment: VW carried out the service campaign, but symptoms persist
- Gewährleistungsstreit: VW classifies the problem as wear rather than a manufacturing defect
- Verzögerungen: Your dealer refuses a prompt appointment or demands unexpected costs
gavelLegal and technical options
- Dokumentation sammeln: Photograph error messages, range tests, charging curves
- Schriftliche Beschwerde: Formal letter to VW with a deadline (recommended: 14 days)
- Unabhängige Expertise: ESDI EV can carry out a professional diagnosis to clarify the cause
- Gewährleistung / Garantie: Depending on age and mileage, warranty claims may exist

Frequently asked questions about service campaign 93P7
Does service campaign 93P7 cost anything? expand_more
No. Service campaign 93P7 is completely free of charge. All work – both software updates and module replacement – is covered by Volkswagen. If a dealer demands costs, contact VW customer care immediately.
My vehicle is model year 2022 – am I affected? expand_more
Service campaign 93P7 primarily concerns model year 2021. Vehicles from 2022 and later are not affected according to the current situation. Nevertheless, have your vehicle checked by a VW dealer to be sure.
How long does carrying out the service campaign take? expand_more
The software update typically takes 2–3 hours. Should a module replacement be necessary, it can take 4–6 hours. Arrange an appointment and ask about the estimated duration.
Is the range fully restored after the service campaign? expand_more
In most cases yes. The software update and the module replacement remedy the cell defects. However, note that natural battery wear (degradation) remains over the years. This is normal for lithium-ion batteries.
Can I keep driving while I wait for a service-campaign appointment? expand_more
Yes, the vehicle is safe to drive. The service campaign remedies defects but does not mean an immediate safety hazard. Keep driving normally until you get an appointment – but it is sensible not to wait too long.
What distinguishes ESDI EV from a VW dealer? expand_more
ESDI EV is independent and has no direct obligations to Volkswagen. If a dealer rejects your case, we can carry out a neutral, professional diagnosis and – if necessary – repair independently. We work exclusively for your benefit.
Is the battery like new after the service campaign? expand_more
After the module replacement, the affected component is new or renewed. The vehicle should drive at full power again. However, the rest of the battery remains in the condition before the service campaign – normal wear is not compensated for.
Do you have a 93P7 case?
Have your vehicle checked. Whether you want to know if you are affected, VW is not helping you, or you want a second opinion – ESDI EV is there for you.
