VW T1 Bulli electric conversion
The complete guide: costs, TÜV, kit & instructions (2026)
The VW T1 Bulli is one of the most sought-after icons in automotive history – and one of the best candidates for an electric conversion. With a modern electric drive, the T1 turns from a charming but unreliable classic into an everyday-capable classic: quiet, powerful and emission-free. In this guide you will learn everything you need to know about the T1 electric conversion.
Why convert the T1 Bulli to electric?
The original VW T1 engine – whether a 25 hp economy engine or a 44 hp twin-carburettor – has its charm, but also its limits. On the motorway every incline becomes an adventure, the oil temperature rises dangerously on longer drives, and spare parts are becoming ever rarer and more expensive.
An electric drivetrain solves these problems elegantly:
- Up to 136 hp (PURE) or 300 hp (VOYAGER) instead of 34 hp – The Tesla drive delivers a multiple of the original output with instantly available torque
- No shifting – Direct drive means smooth, stepless acceleration
- No oil changes, no valve adjustments – significantly less maintenance
- Reliability – No carburettor problems, no alternator failures, no overheating
- Low-emission zones – Free travel everywhere, even with diesel driving bans
- Increase in value – An electric T1 is future-proof and suitable for everyday use
What does the VW T1 electric conversion cost?
The costs depend on the chosen configuration:
| Package | Power | Battery | Range | Kit price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PURE | bis zu 100 kW (136 PS) | ca. 55 kWh | bis zu 200 km | 29.990 € |
| VOYAGER | bis zu 220 kW (300 PS) | 82 kWh | bis zu 350 km | 64.990 € |
Turnkey with Installation at ESDI adds a flat €5,000: €34,990 (PURE) or €69,990 (VOYAGER), excl. base vehicle. The TÜV accompaniment is included; the fees for the expert report and individual approval are added as a separate line item and passed through unchanged.

Which T1 models are compatible?
Our kit is designed for all VW T1 variants (Type 2, 1950–1967):
- T1 Samba Bus (23-window) – the crown jewel. Especially valuable: here, careful documentation of the original condition is particularly worthwhile.
- T1 Kombi / Microbus – The classic. Ideal for the electric conversion thanks to the spacious rear.
- T1 flatbed / single cab – Also fully compatible.
- T1 double cab / crew cab – Also fully compatible.
- Early Split-Window models (1950–1955) – On request with adapted adapter pieces.
Technical details: what is in the kit?
Every ESDI EV T1 kit contains:
- Tesla drive unit – up to 100 kW / 136 hp (PURE) or Tesla Model S SDUR with up to 220 kW / 300 hp (VOYAGER), direct drive without gearbox
- Motor adapter – Custom-made for the T1 engine bay, plug-and-play
- Battery modules – approx. 55 or 82 kWh, MEB modules (long-lasting, safe, temperature-stable)
- Battery Management System (BMS) – Monitors cell voltage, temperature and state of charge
- HV wiring harness – Completely pre-assembled with all plugs and fuses
- LV wiring harness – 12V integration for lights, indicators, horn, windscreen wiper
- DC/DC converter – Supplies the 12V electrical system from the HV battery
- AC charger – 10 kW on-board charger for wallbox and public charging stations
- CCS charging socket (Type 2) – AC charging in both tiers, DC fast charging via CCS (up to 70 kW) on the VOYAGER
- Cooling system – Water cooling for motor and battery
- Digital display – Speed, state of charge, range, power
- TÜV documentation – paperwork for the individual approval; the TÜV accompaniment is included, the expert report and individual approval are billed separately
Installation: how the conversion works
Step 1: Removal of the original motor and gearbox. The motor is professionally removed and stored.
Step 2: Fitting of the motor adapter and the Tesla drive unit at the rear. Installation of the battery pack in the box behind the front bench seat.
Step 3: Wiring: HV wiring harness, LV integration, DC/DC converter, charging socket.
Step 4: Mount the cooling system, install the display, initial commissioning and test drive.
Step 5: Fine-tuning, preparing the TÜV inspection, final quality control. We give you a binding date and duration after inspection – currently three to four months' lead time from receipt of payment, followed by around three months of conversion work.
TÜV approval: is the conversion legal?
Yes. Every vehicle is registered via individual approval under §21 StVZO. We supply the technical documents and accompany the presentation at the TÜV – that is included; the fees for the expert report and individual approval come on top. There is no general type approval (ABE) or component certificate for the kit parts.
After the TÜV approval, the vehicle is registered as an electric vehicle. You can apply for an E-license plate ; motor-vehicle-tax exemption: not to be expected (no ABE for conversion parts, § 3d KraftStG) — E-license plate and THG bonus: yes. More on this: H-plate vs E-license plate
Range, charging & everyday usability
With the approx. 55 kWh pack (PURE) you can reach up to 200 km real-world range, with the 82 kWh pack (VOYAGER) up to 350 km. The T1 is not aerodynamically optimal (cw value ~0.44), but thanks to its relatively low weight (~1,200 kg with kit) consumes less than expected.
Loading: AC charging at the wallbox at 10 kW (a full charge of the PURE package in around 5.5 hours, of the VOYAGER package in around 8 hours). CCS fast charging at up to 70 kW is available on the VOYAGER. For typical use as a weekend cruiser or short-distance vehicle, the range is more than sufficient.
Substance-preserving installation: your T1 stays original
No Extensive Cutting Required into the body – individual mounting holes may be necessary per vehicle. For a T1 Samba, which can fetch €100,000 and more on the collector market, that is especially important.
Frequently asked questions about the VW T1 electric conversion
Can I do the conversion myself?
In principle, yes – our kit is designed as a plug-and-play system. However, you need automotive experience and HV qualification for handling high-voltage systems. We recommend installation by a qualified workshop or directly with us.
What happens to my H-plate?
Under current law you lose the H-plate with an electric conversion, because the original drivetrain is removed. In exchange you get an E-plate; you should not expect a motor-vehicle-tax exemption, because the conversion parts lack an ABE. More on that here.
Are there subsidies?
No – there is currently neither federal nor state funding for the conversion, and the motor-vehicle-tax exemption does not apply for lack of an ABE. An E-plate and THG bonus are possible. All subsidies at a glance.
How heavy does the T1 become after the conversion?
We tell you the weight after inspecting the vehicle. In the T1 the battery sits in the box behind the front bench seat; what gets entered in the documents is decided by the inspector.
How loud is the T1 after the conversion?
Practically silent. The typical boxer hum gives way to a quiet whir. Many T1 owners say the quiet gliding is one of the most beautiful aspects of the electric conversion.
