VW T1 Bulli electric conversion: the complete guide (2026)

VW T1 Bulli electric conversion

The complete guide: costs, TÜV, kit & instructions (2026)

The VW T1 Bulli is one of the most sought-after icons in automotive history – and one of the best candidates for an electric conversion. With a modern electric drive, the T1 turns from a charming but unreliable classic into an everyday-capable classic: quiet, powerful and emission-free. In this guide you will learn everything you need to know about the T1 electric conversion.

Why convert the T1 Bulli to electric?

The original VW T1 engine – whether a 25 hp economy engine or a 44 hp twin-carburettor – has its charm, but also its limits. On the motorway every incline becomes an adventure, the oil temperature rises dangerously on longer drives, and spare parts are becoming ever rarer and more expensive.

Ein Elektroantrieb löst diese Probleme elegant:

  • 150 PS statt 34 PS – The Tesla LDU motor delivers three times the original power with instantly available torque
  • Kein Schalten – Direktantrieb bedeutet stufenlose, sanfte Beschleunigung
  • Kein Ölwechsel, kein Ventileinstellen – Wartungskosten sinken um 80%
  • Zuverlässigkeit – Keine Vergaser-Probleme, keine Lichtmaschinen-Ausfälle, kein Überhitzen
  • Low-emission zones – Free travel everywhere, even with diesel driving bans
  • Wertsteigerung – An electric T1 is future-proof and suitable for everyday use

What does the VW T1 electric conversion cost?

The costs depend on the chosen configuration:

PaketPowerBatteryRangeKit price
Standard136 PS48 kWh~200 km29.990 €
Performance300 PS80 kWh~400 km54.990 €

On top of that come installation costs of around €5,000–8,000 (at ESDI or a partner workshop) and the TÜV-Abnahme (around €300–500). A typical complete conversion is around 45.000–65.000 €.

Which T1 models are compatible?

Our kit is designed for all VW T1 variants (Type 2, 1950–1967):

  • T1 Samba Bus (23-window) – The crown jewel. Particularly valuable, which is why reversibility is especially important here.
  • T1 Kombi / Microbus – The classic. Ideal for the electric conversion thanks to the spacious rear.
  • T1 Pritsche / Single Cab – More room for larger battery packs.
  • T1 Doppelkabine / Crew Cab – Ebenfalls voll kompatibel.
  • Frühe Split-Window-Modelle (1950–1955) – On request with adapted adapter pieces.

Technical details: what is in the kit?

Every ESDI EV T1 kit contains:

  • Tesla LDU Elektromotor – 150 PS / 300 Nm, Direktantrieb ohne Getriebe
  • Motor adapter – Custom-made for the T1 engine bay, plug-and-play
  • Battery modules – 32 or 48 kWh, LFP chemistry (durable, safe, temperature-stable)
  • Battery Management System (BMS) – Monitors cell voltage, temperature and state of charge
  • HV wiring harness – Completely pre-assembled with all plugs and fuses
  • LV wiring harness – 12V integration for lights, indicators, horn, windscreen wiper
  • DC/DC converter – Supplies the 12V electrical system from the HV battery
  • AC charger – 10 kW on-board charger for wallbox and public charging stations
  • CCS charging socket (Type 2) – AC and DC charging at every station
  • Cooling system – Water cooling for motor and battery
  • Digital display – Speed, state of charge, range, power
  • TÜV documentation – All test reports and documents for the approval

Installation: how the conversion works

Day 1: Removal of the original engine and gearbox. The engine is stored for later reinstallation.

Day 2: Fitting the motor adapter and the Tesla LDU motor at the rear. Installation of the battery pack.

Day 3: Wiring: HV wiring harness, LV integration, DC/DC converter, charging socket.

Day 4: Mount the cooling system, install the display, initial commissioning and test drive.

Tag 5: Fine-tuning, prepare the TÜV inspection, final quality control and handover.

TÜV approval: is the conversion legal?

Yes. All ESDI EV kits are developed for German road approval. The TÜV approval is carried out according to Leaflet 764 (electric conversion). We supply all required documents: test reports, wiring diagrams, strength certificates and parts reports.

After the TÜV approval, the vehicle is registered as an electric vehicle. You can apply for an E-license plate and benefit from 10 years of vehicle-tax exemption. More on this: H-plate vs E-license plate

Range, charging & everyday usability

With the 32 kWh pack you reach around 150–200 km of real range, with the 48 kWh pack up to 300 km. The T1 is not aerodynamically optimal (cw value ~0.44), but thanks to its relatively low weight (~1,200 kg with kit) consumes less than expected.

Loading: AC charging at the wallbox with 10 kW (full charge in 3–5 hours). CCS fast charging with up to 50 kW (20% to 80% in ~35 minutes). For typical use as a weekend cruiser or short-distance vehicle, the range is more than sufficient.

Reversibilität: Dein T1 bleibt original

This is our core promise: Kein einziges Loch is drilled into the bodywork. No welds, no permanent changes. The original engine is stored and can be reinstalled at any time. For a T1 Samba, which can fetch €100,000 and more on the collector market, this is not just a feature – it is an insurance.

Frequently asked questions about the VW T1 electric conversion

Can I do the conversion myself?

In principle yes – our kit is designed as a plug-and-play system. However, you need automotive experience, especially in handling high-voltage systems. We recommend installation by a qualified workshop or directly with us.

What happens to my H-plate?

Under current law you lose the H-plate with an electric conversion, because the original drive is removed. In return you get an E-license plate with tax exemption. Since our conversion is reversible, you can return to the original at any time. Mehr dazu hier.

Are there subsidies?

Yes – vehicle-tax exemption for 10 years, E-license plate advantages and regional subsidy programmes. All subsidies at a glance.

How heavy does the T1 become after the conversion?

The additional weight is around 100–150 kg compared with the original. This is within the permissible gross mass and hardly affects the handling – the low installation position of the battery even improves the centre of gravity.

How loud is the T1 after the conversion?

Practically silent. The typical boxer hum gives way to a quiet whir. Many T1 owners say the quiet gliding is one of the most beautiful aspects of the electric conversion.
